Many teenagers who have scoliosis lack self-confidence and self-esteem. Between the ages of 10 and 12, we start questioning self worth and it becomes more and more important to us how we look. Teenagers with scoliosis have a notable situation because their deformity is visible. In puberty it is very important to build self-confidence, self-esteem and physical appearance.
Because scoliosis is visible, teenagers try to hide their deformity in an incorrect way, and this may cause back pain. In this way, they affect their quality of life, their self-confidence, their self-esteem, and risks of stress and depression are increased. Stress is how we react physically, mentally and emotionally to stimulus. When we determine that we can keep something stressful under control, then it is less stressful. However, when we see that we can’t control the situation, the stress becomes bigger for us.
Positive stress is when phenomenal things happen to us, after which we are also exhausted. However, this gives us positive energy and positively affects our self-confidence and self-esteem.
Negative stress is when something terrible happens, something with which we do not know how to deal with, where we feel powerless and unable to work within our psychological capacities, which we need in order to be able to cope better with the following situations.
It is important to note that scoliosis is not a disease and it should not make us feel less worthy. Scoliosis is treatable.
